When
setting up defense, one of the most important elements is the speed you
get it up and running. For Protoss, this is the strategy that Ive found
the most effective.
First
off, you got 4 probes and your nexus. Make the probes gather minerals,
and start a new probe. Keep getting probes till your eight one is being
built. Then go build a pylon behind your minerals. When it is done, start
your forge. You should have about 10 probes by the time your done
the forge. Then build a pylon at your entrance off centered to the right
or left, and backed up so you cannot seal it. See example below.

Then,
once it is all settled as seen above, in a straight line, with the extremities
up half a turret. ex. -___- Build Turrets all around
for air defense. When playing vs. Humans, I suggest you build the required
buildings for offense, start upgrades, then get air defense. Do not be
affraid to use units for defense. I prefer using plenty of photon cannons.

Do not forget to upgrade Plasma shields to make your photons more effective.
